North Carolina Tightens DUI Laws for First Time Offenders

North Carolina state legislators are currently considering several big changes to the way that DUI offenders are punished. For example, current laws stipulate that only drivers who have an elevated blood alcohol content (BAC) or who have been arrested more than once for a DUI will be forced to use an interlock ignition device when they regain their driving privileges. However, if House Bill 43 is passed, anyone who is convicted of a DUI, regardless of their BAC, will be required to use an interlock ignition device. These devices make it much more difficult for someone to quickly become a repeat offender, and this helps local law enforcement officials keep the streets safe for other motorists.
